New iMac inspired by Audi?

Well, that's what conceptcar.co.uk is reporting.

Apple have unveiled the latest incarnation of the iMac and once again are promoting the one-piece computer as more of a piece of sculpture than a bit of IT kit. Like much in the world of contemporary design, materials count for a lot. Apple have made much of the aluminium and glass used to make the iMac, materials which are perhaps more at home in an architectural context. However, it wasn't the architectural similarities that grabbed our attention, rather it was the way the glass-plated LCD resembled an automotive windscreen. With the sheen of the aluminium case topped off with the chrome apple logo, we knew it looked a little like something else... an Audi! Possibly.

Audi to use RFID's

RFID's are used in most offices to gain access to secure access to buildings. They are also used when purchasing gas at Esso and Shell. Simply swipe your keychain and doors open or you pay for your gas.

Audi is now moving away from barcodes and moving to RFID's. You can read more about it on Autopia or checkout the Wikipedia RFID article.

Audi Wins Back to Back Awards

Voted Car Company of the year from AutoCar Magazine.

AUDI AG has been presented with one of the automotive world’s most important and coveted Awards: the jury of the renowned British car magazine "Autocar“ has presented the „Autocar Award“ for "Car Company of the Year 2006“ to the premium brand from Ingolstadt.

Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, accepted the Award in the new "Mercedes-Benz World“ at the site of the historic Brooklands race track near London. In his acceptance speech, Winterkorn declared: "this Award is for all Audi employees.“

The decisive factor for the Autocar jury was the range of products that Audi has launched in recent years. When compared to models from premium competitors such as BMW and Mercedes, the magazine concluded that Audi products: "offered equal value, were arguably better built, and often technologically more interesting. Our exhaustive tests show its models now stand with the best“.

And the Audi V12 TDI Wins Race Engine of the Year.

Audi yet again proved "Vorsprung durch Technik” on the race track by taking the first victory for a diesel powered sportscar at the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours. The revolutionary diesel technology has now also triumphed in competition with Formula 1 and other motorsport categories: A panel of experts from the British specialist magazine "Race Engine Technology” voted the 650 hp V12 TDI engine from the Audi R10 TDI as "Race Engine of the Year 2006” and "Alternative Race Engine of the Year”.

On behalf of AUDI AG, Ulrich Baretzky accepted the "Race Engine of the Year” trophy at the Professional MotorSport World Expo in Cologne. The Head of Engine Technology at Audi Sport was also awarded the title "Design Engineer of the Year 2006” at the international motorsport exhibition.

The Audi R10 TDI is unbeaten since making its debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring (USA) last March. The revolutionary diesel sportscar started eight races and took the chequered flag as winner on each occasion – impressive proof of the efficiency of Audi TDI Power.

Audi customers will soon benefit from the experience gained at Le Mans starting with a 500 hp V12 TDI engine for the Q7. Worldwide every second new Audi is already delivered with a diesel engine – trend increasing.

2007 Audi S6 Review

Fourtitude.com has a review of the 2007 Audi S6. Be Sure to check it out.

The S6 name and the lineage it represents is hallowed ground for brand loyalists. Audi launched the S-car range with this S6’s great granddaddy - the Ur S-car, four generations back and roughly 15 years ago. Enthusiast owners of that car and the generations that followed are a fiercely loyal bunch, attracted by the utility of Audi’s mid-sized performance sedan and also to the forced induction and ease of tuning of a turbocharged engine. Today’s S6 enters the market sans turbochargers, and for the first time with no station wagon variant available for North America.

In its favor is arguably one of the best C-chassis designs in the history of Audi, and a V10 developed from that of a Lamborghini Gallardo… street cred indeed. But, will this be enough to win over those who’ve owned the vaunted Ur S-cars, while at the same time woo over cross-shoppers from Mercedes and BMW or tantalize the bandwagon buyers who just want to own the next “it" car? To answer that question, we headed to Montreal, Quebec to sample the new S6 first hand.

Audi Q7 V12 TDI

What do you get when you grab a Toureg V10TDI, add two cylinders and upgrade the interiour? Well you get a Audi Q7 V12 TDI!

Gizmag has the story.

Audi is set to debut the first twelve-cylinder diesel engine in a series passenger car. A six-litre V12 will be available in the Audi Q7 that is reminiscent of the engine featured in the all-conquering R10 Le Mans racing car and it catapults the driving performance of the Audi Q7 SUV into the echelons of top-class sports cars. The V12 TDI engine produces a colossal 500 PS and 1,000 Nm of torque giving the car a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 5.5 seconds, and an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h. Maximum torque is available from just 1,750 rpm. The high-tech diesel engine, with the world’s first 2,000 bar Bosch Common Rail system, provides the high-performance Audi SUV with superior power reserves in any situation. The impressive sound of the new Audi is provided by the ultra-modern piezo-injection system. The V12 TDI transmits this power through a new six-speed tiptronic gearbox to the quattro permanent four-wheel drive system.

Checkout the Audo Press Release

INGOLSTADT, Germany—Audi is aiming to cash in on its victory this past June at Le Mans with its diesel-powered R10; the automaker is bringing out a spectacular new 6.0-liter V-12 diesel engine.

Planned for the German carmaker's Q7 SUV next year, the new unit marries two of Audi's 3.0-liter V-6 units on a common crankshaft and is said to kick out a solid 500 hp. That's some 174 hp more than Audi's strongest diesel to date, the 4.2-liter V-8 unit found in the top-of-the-line A8.

Significantly, it's also 50 hp more than Audi's largest gasoline engine, the 450-hp 6.0-liter W-12. The defining characteristic of the new engine, however, is its mammoth torque, which peaks at 737 pound-feet—restricted only by the inability of the Q7's ZF-engineered six-speed automatic gearbox to handle any more. Nevertheless, it's still enough to make the new V-12 the world's most powerful production car diesel engine. Audi claims the new V-12 propels the Q7 from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.5 seconds, with top speed limited to 155 mph. Combined cycle fuel consumption is put at 19.7 mpg.

Accompanying the new engine is a series of suspension tweaks along with the inclusion of ceramic brake discs, which are claimed to reduce unsprung mass by more than 50 percent. Other changes include a restyled grille and LED driving lights similar to those seen on the S6.

Although Audi denies it, rumors abound that the new diesel engine will be offered in the upcoming R8 supercar planned to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show later this month

A day in a 2007 Audi A4 3.2

Wow. Yes, I'm going to start with WOW! We got a loaner a couple of weeks ago while our Golf was in for service. It happens that our dealer is also an Audi dealer. They also had an 3.2l A4 available for the day as a loaner.

The interior was leather. The car was roomy and it had a lot of GO! with the 3.2L. Somehow, i'll try to book my service appointments on saturday in order to get another Audi loaner. Makes me wonder how a day in a 2007 Passat would compare. I think the passat will be just as good without the depreciation of the Audi.

Audi A8 TDI vs Gasser

Insideline pits the A8 TDI against the A8 Gas.

Consider those for a moment. The diesel-powered Audi A8 4.2 TDI is not only more economical than the gasoline-powered A8 4.2, it also produces fewer greenhouse gases and, most importantly for readers of this Web site, it's also significantly quicker.

For the past few years, while the U.S. has been bemoaning ever increasing gas prices, the Europeans have been experiencing a quiet, bloodless diesel revolution. The introduction of multivalve, common-rail direct-injection and pre-ignition technology has transformed the diesel engine from a noisy agricultural workhorse into an ultrarefined, economical powerhouse worthy of the finest performance and luxury cars. Across Europe, more than a third of new cars now stop at the black pump and in some countries, diesel cars outsell petrol.

The Audi 5000

Here is a look at the Audi 5000. The car that got killed by 60 Minutes investigative jornalism.

The 5000 died a quick, undeserved death in the American marketplace, stabbed in the sales chart by investigative journalism. Its influence, however, is still with us twenty-three years later. Within just a couple model seasons, most Japanese manufacturers had appropriated the 5000’s “no nonsense” persona for their own, more modest vehicles. Mazda styled its late-80s 323, 626, and 929 sedans as knockoffs of Audi’s flagship saloon. The 1987 Toyota Camry and 1990 Honda Accord also carried surprising amounts of Teutonic styling DNA. It took American manufacturers a little longer, but eventually even they stripped their cars of chrome, complicated sheetmetal bends, and any other ornamentation.

A3 vs GTI

Autoblog pits the A3 and the GTI against each other. Their conculusion is that the A3 wins the style point while the GTI gets the substance points.

In a world where image is everything, we're going to give a slight edge to the Audi at the end of the day. When considering in which we want to be seen by our fellow man, there is no nip/tuck of a designer's pen that can change the fact that one of these cars is an Audi and the other a Volkswagen. All things being equal, we'd ask for the Audi's keys first everytime. Still, VW gets props for the handsome digs on its new hatchback, and the soon-to-be-resurrected Rabbit badge on the base models means an equally good looking Golf isn't far away.

2008 Audi TT's New Suspension

Gizmag.com has a great article on the technology in the 2008 TT suspension.

The Audi TT is a cult car, an icon –from the day it made its debut, in autumn 1998, it took the sports coupe segment by storm, sharpening the brand's profile in the process. We reported on the coming of the second generation of this successful model in April but overlooked one of the most interesting facets of the new machine which uses a completely new form of damping technology developed in conjunction with Delphi that resolves the age-old conflict between comfort and driving dynamics without countenancing any of the otherwise unavoidable compromises. As a continuously adaptive system, it adapts the damping characteristic to the profile of the road and the driver's gear-shifting habits within just a few milliseconds. The shock absorber pistons on the TT do not contain conventional oil, but a magneto-rheological fluid – a synthetic hydrocarbon oil in which microscopically small magnetic particles measuring between three and ten microns are enclosed. When a voltage is applied to a coil – by means of a pulse delivered by a control unit – a magnetic field is created in which the alignment of the particles changes. They position themselves transversely to the direction of flow of the oil, and so inhibit its flow through the piston channels. This alters the characteristic of the damping characteristic much faster than is the case in conventional adaptive dampers.

2008 Audi TT

Well there won't be a 2007 Model year for the TT. Instead, Audi will release the TT in early 2007 as a 2008 model year.

LeftLanenews.com

Audi confirmed this week that it will sell the new TT coupe as a 2008 model in the United States. Production of the car began on Tuesday, with European availability slated for September of this year. We suspect U.S. availability will begin in early 2007 — as previously reported — and the decision to sell it as a 2008 model is strictly a marketing move.

Future Audi Models

WhatCar.com discusses future audi models.

String of new Audi models on the way

Audi A5 by Schulte
• A5 Coupe launches by summer next year
• Q5 4x4 follows in 2008 to slot underneath Q7
• High-power S3 first to arrive by the end of 2006
Audi has confirmed a raft of new models including a high-performance S3, all-new A5 coupe and a Q5 compact 4x4 to sit beneath the Q7.

The powerful S3 will be the first to arrive with a launch date some time later this year and a price tag of about £27,000. Little is known about the sporty A3, but it's thought to have a turbocharged, direct-injection petrol engine with an output of around 270bhp.

Next to arrive in showrooms will be the A5. The coupe will use many of the mechanical parts from the next A4, expected around 2008, and will probably be between the A4 and A6 in size.

It's tipped to follow Audi's Nuvolari concept car in styling which is used as the basis of the computer-generated images you see here. Budget for around £25,000.

Audi has also confirmed that in 2008 it will launch a smaller 4x4 to slot underneath the Q7. The Q5 will offer five-seats to the Q7's seven, and rival the BMW X3. Our computer-generated images should give a good idea of what it's going to look like. Expect to pay from about £30,000.

Mercedes is also working on a compact 4x4, built around next year's new C-Class platform, and will also launch its car in 2008.

2008 Audi Q5

LeftLaneNews.com has an article on the 2008 Audi Q5 based on the MKVI VW golf platform.

Audi announces plans for 2008 Audi Q5 2008-audi-q5.jpgAudi today announced plans to build the much-rumored Q5 crossover in 2008. The automaker will invest around 300 million euros into the Ingolstadt production facility over the next several months. The Audi Q5 will join the Audi Q7 as the Audi brand’s second model in the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment. “The Audi Q5 will be an overtly sporty vehicle that will add an important product to the Audi model range. The Audi Q5 will take us a big step closer to vehicle sales of 1.4 million per year, a target that we have set ourselves for 2015,” said chairman Martin Winterkorn. At present, the Audi A3, A3 Sportback, A4 saloon and Avant, and Audi TT Coupe are built in Ingolstadt. Recently, Audi announced plans to build the R8 supercar at Neckarsulm and the A5 coupe in Ingolstadt. In related 2008 model news, Lotus yesterday announced plans to build a 2008 Esprit replacement. Audi R8 coming in 2007

The best part about the article from inside line, is that the R8 will be out by mid 2007.

NECKARSULM, Germany — Audi is investing $35 million in new tooling at its assembly plant here in preparation for the mid-2007 launch of its first supercar, the R8.

The high-performance midengined two-seater is based on the Le Mans concept from the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. It will be completely hand-built by about 250 Audi employees, many of whom previously worked on the startup phase of the Lamborghini Gallardo — with which the R8 will share a number of critical components, including an aluminum space frame.

Production of the all-wheel-drive R8 is being overseen by Audi's quattro subsidiary, which also assembles the limited-edition RS series of high-performance production cars.

Audi said the lightweight aluminum bodies for the R8 will be painted on the same line here as the Gallardo and the A8 sedan.

Insiders now expect the production model will feature a 420-horsepower version of Audi's 4.2-liter V8, although an optional V10 is also rumored for an uplevel variant.

Audi is hinting the production R8 will make its debut this fall at the Paris Motor Show. Expect a $100,000-plus sticker price on the base car when it arrives in U.S. showrooms as a 2008 model.

What this means to you: The R8, née "Le Mans," edges closer to reality.

2010 Audi A1

Automobile has an article on the 2010 A1.

Possible A1 competition: the Mini Cooper Audi dropped its tiny A2 last year after a disappointing five-year run. But Audi boss Martin Winterkorn is keen to do another small car, this time aimed at BMW's Mini. 'Audi needs to keep on growing,' he says. 'Productive growth requires entering new segments. I believe there is room below the A3 for a new Audi model.'

A two-door is a certainty, but the exact shape is not decided. A long-roof hatchback is the front-runner; it's purposeful, pretty, and without a direct rival-at least until Mini releases its Traveller. A sportier body style, sort of a miniature Audi TT, could be a second model. Audi also is planning an S1 version to take on the Mini Cooper S. The S1 would get a 240-hp, 2.0-liter turbo, while the A1 would offer a lesser turbo, or possibly a twincharged, four. Six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG gearboxes are likely. Will the baby Audi come to the States? America loves the Mini Cooper, but the A3's performance here is probably more relevant. Either way, the A1 won't be ready until 2010.

2010 Audi A8 Pictures

The car connection has spy shots of the 2010 Audi A8.
The first prototype mules have been sighted near the Nürburgring. Photos show the test car is about three inches longer than the current A8. Power will come from a new V-12 diesel and a new V-10 gasoline engine.

Audi's new A8 will meet strong competition on its introduction. In the same year, BMW will launch the new 7-Series, and the long-awaited Porsche Panamera four-door will also be on sale.

March AUDI Sales still strong

Via the Beaufort Gazette
German automaker Audi AG said Tuesday that worldwide deliveries of its cars rose 10 percent in March compared with the same month last year, with its A3 and A6 lines boosting demand. The Ingolstadt, Germany-based automaker, the luxury arm of Volkswagen AG, said deliveries last month rose to more than 93,600 cars. For the first three months of the year, deliveries were 226,700 vehicles, a 16 percent rise from the first three months of 2005. Sales of its A3 hatchback model rose 22 percent in the first quarter, with 65,400 cars sold, while its A6 line saw 59,500 cars delivered, up 49 percent from a year ago. The A4 line accounted for 82,300 vehicle deliveries, up some 3 percent on the year. Despite the increases, which the company said were records for both March and the quarter, shares of the company fell more than 3 percent to close at 320.50 euros ($387.51) in Frankfurt trading.

Audi Elvis Commercial

Here is a German Audi commercial for their Multitronic/cvt transmission.

Excepts from wikipedia.org A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a type of automatic transmission that can change the "gear ratio" (gears are not generally involved) to any arbitrary setting within the limits. The CVT is not constrained to a small number of gear ratios, such as the 4 to 6 forward ratios in typical automotive transmissions. CVT control computers often emulate the traditional abrupt gear changes, especially at low speeds, because most drivers expect the sudden jerks and will reject a perfectly smooth transmission as lacking in apparent power.

Audi developed a new stepless transmission named Multitronic. This new transmission is stepless because there is no gear change as exhibited on a modern automatic or manual transmission. This transmission was based off of existing CVT but radically changed to transfer power better and reduce power loss even more.

Audi TT Preview

Here's our first look at the next TT. Audi has setup a teaser site for your viewage. Look for the complete reveal to be in April. The TT's design has aged well, but the model is in need of a boost. A recent Detroit News article pegged the TT as sitting on a dealer's lot for 159 days before being sold. It's a tough job to restyle such a classic and unique design. To add extra flavor to the redo it looks like Audi is adding a "shooting brake" wagon/hatchback model at some point. That baby would make three: the coupe, convertible and hatch.

2007 Audi RS4 Races German Bullet Train and Wins!

The GermanCarBlog has a story on how an RS4 beat the pants off the German ICE bullet train between Munich and Berlin(600KM). Checkout the result!

Audi RS4
Ok, guys. The results are here from the duel of an Audi RS4 against Germany's bullet train, the ICE.

And the Audi RS4 really did it! He scored the victory in this unusual race. And it was very impressive: he arrived 2 hours (!) earlier than the bullet train! Just to remind you, it was a race over 600 km from Munich to Berlin.

Though we know that the Audi RS4 is really a fast street machine, we also know that the German bullet train isn't the best of all. Nothing comparable to Japan's Shinkansen. So we guess the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

But anyway it stays a sweet victory!

Diesel RS or S Audi Models?

There is a discussion on TDIClub.com about whether Audi show come out with TDI versions of the RS and S versions of their cars.

I'm all for it. Audi/VW may not have the engine building capacity and that's probably the reason we don't see diesel RS and S cars.

Oh yea, if you own or thinking of owning a diesel, checkout TDIclub FAQ it will save you money.

In 2006 Audi will kick some ass!

Reuters has an articles about Audi's 2006 financial forecasts.

I'm not a believer of companies giving sales forecasts to shareholders. I guess it comes to my following Warren Buffet.

Anyway it's pretty clear to me that Audi is on very good footing with their current model lineup.

2007 Audi Allroad

CARSCOOP has some pictures of the 2007 A6 Allroad

A FEW days before its official unveiling in the Geneva Motor Show, Carscoop got its hands on these first -official images of Audi’s second generation A6 Allroad model that got there way in the internet.

Based on the Detroit prototype, the new A6 Allroad retains the crossover concept of its predecessor. The A6 Allroad will be available with two diesel engines, 2.7 TDI & 3.0 TDI and two petrol, the new 3.6 FSI V6 & the 4.2 FSI V8. Sales will start in the forthcoming summer.

Update: Found some pictures on autoblog italy.

Audi RS4 Cabrio

Automotive News has pictures of the New RS4 Cabrio. Like all RS badged cars it's a MONSTER.

Checkout the Audi RS4 Cabrio article and pictures.

Official pics for the first of the 3 world premieres that Audi will show in Geneva.

It's the RS4 Cabrio, as anticipated. Hairs flying in the winds, four seats, soft-top, a fabolous engine and terrifying performance.

If you really have to know, it has the same engine (V8 4.2 with 420 ps) as the saloon, but it's a tad slower: from 0-100 km/h it takes 4.9 seconds (4,8 s for the saloon), from 0-200 km/h it takes 17.5 seconds (versus 16.9 s).

Must be because it weighs more (underbody reinforcements to compensate the loss of torsional resistance) despite all efforts by Quattro Gmbh to reduce the weight compared to the base A4 Cabrio.
